This week we started really getting into our volleyball unit. With the second grade we taught them different ways to throw the ball over the net which was a necessary skill for a game call Newcomb we played on Wednesday and Thursday. The students really like this game. It's a modified game of volleyball but you throw the ball 3 times on each side instead of bumping, setting, spiking, and serving. The third and forth grade we started off having them serve early in the week and work them into playing an actually volleyball game later in the week. As this can be the very first time the third grade has ever played in a volleyball match before it was vital to be extremely clear while instructing. I improved throughout numerous times of instructing the material. My goal was to write at least one lesson plan. I achieved this goal. My new goal set for next week is communicate with parents and schedule parent meetings for parent conferences which is coming up in two weeks.

What chapter 6 brought to my attention was the fact how students nowadays communicate. As a society, we depend on technology. I know technology is very important in education but I think some old school ways like writing can go a far way. In physical education is can be difficult to use writing skills and use technology. In both my placements, I've seen both sides of using old school writing and technology based skills. Finding the balance of using both can be vital to maximize student knowledge. With that being said, in physical education there isn't too much work that includes writing or using technology. In my case, I use writing skills and technology for assessments only.

I enjoyed my visit last week. Volleyball can be challenging when working with elementary students and rules often have to be modified in order for them to achieve a certain amount of success. I know you experienced that and making adjustments is a very positive move. One possible way to get PE students into some writing is by having them journal. You can decide the topic each week that you would like them to write on.
ReplyDeleteI agree that PE students can keep journals of their physical activity, or what foods they eat, or even their weight or how they are feeling. They can also critique other students' form for things like serving a volleyball, or shooting a basketball, or whatever. They might also describe a new game or explain how to play something. Also think about academic language, which should be going on in all your lessons.
